How many do I need?
Diapers: This depends on how often you want to wash them.
A newborn usually needs their diaper changed every few hours and can go through about 10-15 diapers a day.
I would recommend starting off with 3 dozen diapers for a newborn. This way you have enough to last a few days before washing them.
As your baby gets older they won't need their diaper changed as often. So, you can go longer between washings.
Covers: This also depends on how often you want to wash them.
For a newborn you can get away with 4 covers. You can hang your covers to dry if they are only wet, but need to wash if they are poopey. I always had 2 hanging to dry and 2 in use.
Some people prefer to have 8-10 covers and wash them all at once.
How do I put on these prefolds with pins?
Fold your diaper in thirds, lengthwise. Spread the back open a little to create "wings."
Place your baby on the diaper and fold the front between her legs. If the diaper is too long, you can fold the front down. Now take the "wings" wings and bring to cover the front of the diaper.
This will create a place for you to place your pin. I always have my finger in-between the baby and the diaper where I am placing the pin so incase I am off with the pin, I will stick myself and not the baby.
Now you can just put your cover on.
How do I fold this diaper with the Polar Babies or other wrap?
Boy: Fold your diaper in thirds, lengthwise. Place this in the Polar Baby.
Slip this under your baby's tush. Bring the front of diaper and cover between the babies legs.
If the diaper is too long, you can fold down in front. Now velcro on.
Make sure no cloth is sticking up from the cover.
Girl: Fold your diaper in forths, widthwise. Place this in the Polar Baby.
Slip this under your baby's tush. Bring the front of diaper and cover between the babies legs.
Now velcro on.
Make sure no cloth is sticking up from the cover.
Getting Diaper Rash?
You may need to do an extra rinse at the end of your wash, this gets rid of soap that may be left after the wash.
Or you may need to hang your diapers in the sun, this kills germs.
You may need to change more frequently, some babies are more sensitive than others.
What do you have on your changing table?
I have 2 Polar Babies, 2 Happy Pants and one Fuzzi Bunz for my covers.
For my Diapers, I have 2 dozen Chinese Prefolds, a Dozen Hempers, and a few fitted.
My son is getting too big for the fitted, he is 18 months old and wearing a size 3T.
I also have about 3 dozen cloth wipes, two sets of pins, 2 small diaper pails and 2 wet stuff sacks.
I use one pail for poopie and one for wet. I use the stuff sacks for outings to put the wet diapers in.
Am I really Saving Money?
Well, let's start off by seeing how many diapers you will use on your baby before they are potty trained.
If a baby is in diapers approximately 2.5 years and get their diaper changed about 7 times a day, that would make 6387 diaper changes for one baby.
Now if you buy a pack of disposables they run you about $8-$14 and have between 30-44 diapers in a package. So, if I say that diapers cost about $11 for a 35 diaper package this will run you $2007.00.
Don't forget about the wipes! You can go though a pack of wipes in a week. They are $3.00 for a pack of wipes so add $390 to the diapers and you are up to $2397.00 for your disposables.
